Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer and begins with the irregular growth of skin cells. A study reveals the alarming rise of skin cancer in India and it’s time to take action against skin cancer. According to the reports by experts, skin cancer is one of the most common and most diagnosed cancers. The primary cause of skin cancer is the accumulation of ultraviolet radiation exposure throughout the lifetime. However, it is also said that skin cancer can develop over time because of years of exposure to UV rays. According to the stats, 2,638 people are registered as cancer patients in India and skin cancer constitutes 3.18% of cancer patients.
Exploring the article will detail early symptoms of skin cancer from a medical oncology perspective, understand its types, and how it affects the body parts.
Symptoms of skin cancer
In general, not all skin
cancers are identical and there is very little chance that the symptoms of skin
cancer can be traced easily. But still, any unusual changes in the skin or skin
type can be a warning sign of skin cancer. So, inspecting any changes in the
skin can help in earlier diagnosis of skin cancer. As per the doctor's theory,
any new or changing spots on the skin that persist for two or more weeks can be
an indication of skin cancer and should be immediately brought to the doctor’s
attention. Skin cancer doesn’t highlight any symptoms in the early stages but
it can be concluded through various symptoms highlighted below.
•
A new or changing spot on the skin or changes in the shape, size, and
appearance of an existing spot. The changes can be anything and there’s no way
to describe how a skin cancer looks like.
•
An itchy or painful body spot
•
A new mole, unusual growth, bump, sore, and appearance of dark spot that
doesn’t disappear.
•
A spot having unusual colors such as white, pink, black, blue, or red
can be an indication of skin cancer.
•
A spot that has redness, bleeding, and swelling beyond its borders.
•
Itching or pain in sun-exposed areas like the face, scalp, chest, arms,
and legs, needs a doctor's consultant.
• If the spot size is larger than ¼ inch or about the size of a pencil eraser, it may be an early symptom of skin cancer.
Types of Skin Cancer
There are three most common
types of skin cancer depending on the types of infected cells. Each type of
skin cancer has its signs and warnings
•
Basal Cell Carcinoma: This is one of the most
common skin cancers that arise in the basal cell at the bottom of the upper
layer of skin called the epidermis.
•
Squamous Cell Carcinoma: The most common skin cancer after Basal cell
carcinoma is squamous cell carcinoma which develops in the squamous cells,
which are generally flat cells near the skin surface.
• Melanoma: It develops in the cells called melanocytes which are responsible for changing the skin color.
